Pam Timm has lived on the Florida gulf coast for more than forty years. She’s an enamel artist creating wearable pieces of art and decorative ornamentation. Utilizing several different techniques of this medium, she oftentimes combines other skills in metalworking and lampworking as an accent.
During her early childhood her family managed/lived at Lake Tarpon Marina. There were lots of docks to fish from, plenty of boats to climb in and out of, alligators in the canals, and loads of fun to have as a kid. Always being outdoors helped to cultivate a love of natural presence.
Sketching, drawing and painting have always been a solace while growing up. Being able to bring to life on paper what is seen or imagined has been an expressive outlet of freedom. Having a strong affinity for working with her hands and learning how things are made and function, bring about creative thinking as part of the process for artistic endeavors; nature and beauty married with function and movement are intriguing characteristics.
A creative spark ignited during a trip to a local bead shop. The intricate detail of the glass lampwork beads drew her into wanting to know more about the art form; researching and reading about the history and creative process. Initially teaching herself basic lampworking, she wanted to learn more techniques and different uses of this medium. Taking classes from experienced masters in their own right helped solidify an appreciation of working with molten glass.
Investing in metal working skills like soldering and forging became a necessity when incorporating glass into pieces of jewelry This opened up an opportunity to become introduced to enameling – specifically Cloisonné’ by James Carter. Of all the enameling techniques, Cloisonné’ is the hardest to master – if that’s even possible! It takes a centered mind to be able to work 24K gold and fine silver ribbons. Enameling and its vast variety of techniques is like no other medium that she uses; it’s her favorite. Since then she has learned even more enameling techniques such as Champlevé from Kristin Anderson and screen print enameling from Kathy Wilcox.
Working out of her home studio in Palm Harbor, Florida (PST Designs, LLC) she creates all of her designs from sketch to completion.
The fulfilling sense of being able to express oneself through creativity, having the physical ability to bring about ones ideas, and to be valued as an individual all factor into why she enjoys her craft.
